Why are vps plans more expensive?

As I was searching around people were recommending me shared hosting and vps hosting. I have used shared web hosting before, but not anything like a vps. I found out what it means is a virtual private server. What I found that to mean was that you still share a server with a few others (much less than the thousands on my shared hosting accounts). The added benefit and the same reason they are more expensive, is that people who are into their servers and need more control, this gives it to them. VPS Plans usually allow admin access, so you can configure server technologies like apache to your liking or as your site needs it. The added control and server usage is the main reason for the added cost.
