Brazil and the MINUSTAH

October 28th, 2009 by admin

MINUSTAH is an acronym for the French phrase “Mission des Nations Unies pour la stabilisation en Haïti”. The English translation is “United Nations Mission for Stabilization in Haiti”. This U.N. initiative began in 2004, and is slated to end this month. Purportedly an attempt to establish and maintain citizens’ safety, as well as law and order, MINUSTAH is carried out by over 9000 troops. The group is a coalition of the Brazilian Army, U.N. volunteers, and civilians. Checkpoints and armed cars dot the country, and violence continues to occur, but some signs of progress have been cited by the coalition.
